Lonely Planet forgot to Put La Jolla, CA On Their List
Lonely Planet released its list of the top US cities to visit in 2013 and San Diego wasn't on the list...not surprised after I read who WAS on the list. We all know that San Diego is one of the best places on the planet to live, why else do we live here?? This morning I am sharing with you one of our very favorite places to visit in San Diego! The writers of Lonely Planet have obviously never visited this wonderful little nook off in the cut of La Jolla, California known as La Jolla Cove.
A wonderful place to walk, hike, run, jaunt, stroll, take a date, eat, drink, swim, get some alone time, connect with nature or whatever your little heart desires. My personal favorite is for some alone time with my man, so if you are looking for a quiet and romantic place to take your other half this definitely needs to be on your list of things to do! The scenery will not disappoint!
Less than a quarter of a mile down the street from the Sunny Jim Cave and Store you will find La Jolla Cove. La Jolla Cove faces to the north and limits most of the ocean activity. Therefore, it is usually very calm and the visibility is usually good, sometimes up to 30 feet. The abundance of marine life combined with the typically calm waters, makes La Jolla Cove unique for popular activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming. La Jolla Cove is part of the Ecological Reserve and the waters off this beach are reserved for swimming, snorkeling and diving only. The marine life remains plentiful because possession of game is unlawful and taking sea life or artifacts is prohibited. That means you'll have to buy your souvenir while checking out The Cave Store!
If you would like to snorkel, The Cave Store has snorkeling gear rentals available May-September. If you would prefer to kayak then I would recommend checking out San Diego Bike and Kayak Tours, you won't get access from La Jolla Cove and will need to drive around to the La Jolla Shores side of town. I am curious to try out their #1 most popular tour the La Jolla Caves Kayak Tour, when I do I'll be sure to update you on the experience, given I don't get eaten by a Shark! That truly is my only fear and probably one of the reasons I haven't done it yet.
If you like to hike or run then to the left of The Cave Store you will find San Diego's No. 288th Historical Landmark, Coast Walk Trail. Along this dirt trail (probably not a good place to take a woman wearing high heels) you will find breathtaking ocean views and all sorts of natural wonders. During a low tide you can walk from this trail to La Jolla Shores and vice versa. The views alone are a major reason to do this hike. Check out the amazing pictures I got this morning:
That's okay if hiking, swimming, and kayaking isn't your thing...right along this coastline of nature goodness you will find eateries, restaurants and local small businesses and shops. Stay tuned for our very own review on the Crab Catcher Restaurant and Ocean Tapa Bar Happy Hour, coming soon!

La Jolla Cove is a small beach tucked off in the cliffs at the culdesac off Coast Blvd. The adventure starts at the historic Sunny Jim Cave and Store located at 1325 Cave Street at La Jolla Cove. This La Jolla Cave Store is famous for the man made tunnel from the store to the cave area. The 145-foot tunnel was dug entirely by hand and opened in 1903. There were no stairs in those days but today for a small admission fee you can walk down the 145 steps and have a little cave adventure of your own. Noted as one of the only known sea caves with land access on the California coast visitors can enter this breathtaking cave. For over 100 years the caves of La Jolla have been an attraction for people visiting the area. There are a total of seven sea caves of La Jolla perched within 75-million-year-old sandstone sea cliff.
