The History Of Del Mar Racetrack and Opening Day. Just in case you need help with some small talk while enjoying a few ice cold brews!

Dating back to the early 1900s the Del Mar Fairgrounds was established to promote local agricultural and the home industry. During the Great Depression finding money to fund the county fair became an issue. In 1933, the State Legislature legalized on-track, pari-mutuel wagering on horse races at private tracks, district or county fairs and the State Fair. With the pass of Proposition 3 the state's share of the betting revenue would help to save and support the local county fair. 

For over 75 years residents, tourists and celebrities are able to enjoy the traditions of 'Opening Day', where more than 45,000 race track fans will gather for fashion, big bets and fast horses. The Del Mar Racetrack will be open this year Wednesday July 17 through Wednesday, September 4, 2013 (excluding Labor Day and Tuesdays). 

The gates will open at 11:30 a.m. with the first post at 2 p.m., get your bets in early!! If you are new to the racetrack and want to learn more be sure to check out the Newcomers' Seminars held daily 1:00-1:45 p.m. at Plaza de Mexico. They will teach you everything you need to know about the races from the horses, the odds/wagering, racing terminology and strategies to tips and picks.
Opening Day hosts several events before the races begin and Coors Light sponsors the traditional Opening Day Party with live bands, a beer garden and wagering, details on their site here.
