December 3rd this year kicked off the OB Restaurant Week! Don't worry if you forgot or didn't know, you still have two more days to enjoy flavorful bites and popular craft beers. OB Restaurant Week ends December 7th and there aren't any tickets to purchase the participating restaurants will offer special discounts and showcase menus for breakfast, lunch or dinner. You can check out all of the details here.

It just so happens that we visited one of the participating restaurants last week for a well deserved plate of biscuits and gravy, eggs scrambled well and bacon..Heaven!! Complete Heaven! So this leads me to our personalized restaurant review of The Old Townhouse Restaurant located at 4941 Newport Ave., Ocean Beach, Ca. Please note that this is my personal opinion from my personal experience, thank you. Feel free to leave your personal experience in the comments section at the end of this article.

Ocean Beach is approximately 7 miles from downtown San Diego just South of Mission Bay and Mission Beach. For those of you who may not know, Newport Avenue is the main business street of Ocean Beach with a lot of history. Small eclectic shops include: restaurants, head shops, tattoo parlors, piercing parlors, coffee houses, bars, bikes, surf shops, an international youth hostel and antique storefronts. It makes for a wonderful window shopping experience in a laid back beach community and weather couldn't have been more perfect at about 70 degrees.

I was craving some good breakfast food this particular morning and we decided to go visit OB because we heard on our favorite local news channel (Hi Raoul, Shally, Chrissy and Erica)  that the waves were huge. We visited this small cafe on a Friday morning at about 9:30 am. We had no wait and seated ourselves in the far right corner booth. The place was well lit by natural light from the wall to wall windows at the storefront..And when I say "seated ourselves" that's exactly what you do! Laid back environment, locals filled the booths and counter space, I counted about 25 peeps, pretty busy . We were greeted immediately by a gentleman with a coffee pot, music to my ears, "would you like some coffee, Mam?" So that was nice, despite the fact that there was no meet and greet when we entered the building.

The menus are right there on the tabletop along with the usual suspects of condiments for breakfast foods, hot sauce, syrup, coffee creamer, sugar, salt and pepper. The menu had two sides one for breakfast the other for lunch. The breakfast menu ranged from egg plates, and omelets to biscuits and gravy and a south of the border twist (next time I'll try the Chorizo with eggs plate!) They also had Specials, I went with the Biscuits Special consisting of one biscuit with gravy, three eggs any style, two sausages or bacon and hash browns all for under 8 bones, not bad! The waitress was attentive and very polite, I could tell she had her hands full and seemed to manage it all very well, my coffee cup was never low (pretty sure it was 3 refills that I didn't have to ask for). The biscuits and gravy was everything that I expected, the gravy was a heavier consistency with chunks of sausage, I would definitely get them again. The eggs were made perfect to my specification of scrambled well with a side of salsa that had a bit of a spicy bite to it, but very tasty! The bacon was delicious with the perfect crunch factor and I rate the hash browns an okay, I would not order them again simply because they were the shredded type with no seasoning and seemed either too cold or undercooked to enjoy.

Our bill was less than $25 for two breakfast specials and two coffees, definitely worth it for the quality of food, service and experience of OB. I will definitely be back to visit especially when I get the craving for biscuits and gravy. I would recommend this quaint restaurant to anyone looking to grab some home cooked breakfast on their own (counter seating convenience specifically for those dining alone), couples, and parties of 4 or less, its a small place that strums up a good meal for a great cost. I'm not sure if its kid friendly, we didn't bring our two rambunctious boys nor would we, as far as a highchair it might be a tight fit, leave the strollers in the car.
